MENLO SCHOOL • SINCE 1915

Transfer Applicants

While our main entry points are in 6th and 9th grade during the fall term, we accept applications for 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades and occasionally have openings for transfer students.

Applications for transfer admission and financial aid (optional) are due on January 9, 2025.

Availability is assessed after our re-enrollment period concludes in early March; students may be admitted in March or given an opportunity to opt into our wait pool, which is kept active over the summer months. Please note that we do not consider mid-year transfer applications for any grade.

Transfer Application Process

Transfer applicants undergo a two-stage process. All pieces of the transfer application are due by January 9, 2025, except the live interview. Candidates with otherwise complete applications undergo a preliminary review in early February. Then, well-qualified candidates are invited to campus for a Student Visit Experience and Interview in late February—early March. Only those invited to interview for the second stage will remain in consideration.

Middle School Transfer Requirements
(Grades 7 and 8)

Due to our World Language curriculum structure, applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • The applicant is currently studying one of Menlo’s offered languages (French, Mandarin, Latin, or Spanish)
  • The applicant is a heritage Spanish speaker

Please Note:

  • All Middle School transfer applicants must take a World Language assessment with Menlo World Language teachers on the same day as their Star Assessment.
  • Please register for the January 26 Star Assessment to fulfill this requirement.

Upper School Transfer Recommendations
(Grades 10, 11, and 12)

Applicants must have taken courses that put them on track to meet Menlo School’s graduation requirements in their remaining high school years.

  • Completed courses:
    • English, History, and Math in each previous grade level
    • Physics (for all transfer grades)
    • Chemistry (for 11th grade)
    • At least ONE year of a world language offered at Menlo School—either French, Latin, Mandarin, or Spanish
    • Some progress towards Arts credits
    • Some Health/PE classes or participation in sports
  • Be prepared to take a math placement test after enrollment, as Menlo’s math curriculum may differ from your current school.
  • For 10th and 11th-grade transfers: If the applicant has already taken Biology (common for 9th graders in other schools), they will receive credit for it but should expect to take Physics at some point, potentially with students in a different grade level.

Please note:

  • The Admissions team evaluates each transfer application by analyzing the student’s record and likelihood of success at Menlo School.
  • Transfer students should know they may need to adjust their course sequence or take classes with students in different grade levels to meet Menlo’s requirements.
