NorCals: Baseball opens with shutout

Menlo beats Redding Christian

Menlo sophomore Jack Freehill had two hits and drove in three runs Tuesday against Redding Christian.
With Luke Rogers and Jack Freehill landing a 1-2 punch at the top of the order, the Menlo baseball team opened the CIF-Div. V NorCals with an 8-0 victory Tuesday over visiting Redding Christian.
The top-seeded Knights (22-9) will play No. 5 Oakland Tech in Thursday’s semifinals, 4:00 pm at home. Oakland Tech defeated Lowell 5-4 in the first round.

Junior Ben Salma pitched fifth, and sophomore Jackson Flanagan gave up a lone hit in two innings for the team shutout.
Knights sophomore Freehill had two hits and drove in three runs, and Rogers, a junior, went 2 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs and drew a walk.
Rogers doubled to lead off the first, then Freehill picked up the RBI on a line drive to center.
Menlo sophomore Chuck Wynn doubled on a fly to center, then with two out in the second, sophomore Jackson Flanagan hit a hard ground ball and reached on an error, sending Wynn home.

The Knights put an exclamation mark on the game with a four-run sixth. Freehill singled, and advanced on the errant throw, sending home Salama and Rogers - both of whom had walked. Senior Garrett Tran hit a grounder, and reached on an error before Freehill and senior Mikey McGrath scored.
