Menlo 9th graders participating in the Identity and Belonging seminar

9th Grade Seminar

To set the stage for a transformative and well-rounded high school experience, all 9th graders take part in a yearlong seminar rotation designed to spark academic growth, nurture emotional well-being, and strengthen social connection, while offering an engaging introduction to Menlo’s community, culture, and values.

Students rotate through ten thoughtfully designed courses that explore relevant topics like AI and digital literacy; provide a window into some of Menlo’s signature programs, such as Whitaker Lab and Community Engagement; and weave purpose, wellness, and belonging into the foundation of their high school experience.

The yearlong format also integrates grade-wide community-building and orientation activities while creating space for essential programming in executive functioning, metacognition, and academic skill-building, led by our Learning Center faculty.

Throughout the program, students form early connections with one another as well as with trusted adults—including our Upper School counselors, the Director of Institutional Belonging, and the Community Engagement coordinator—creating a strong network of care that supports both students and our broader school community.

A reflection of Menlo’s EDIB and wellness strategic priorities, the 9th Grade Seminar underscores our deep commitment to nurturing a culture of kindness, trust, and belonging and helping students lead balanced, purposeful, and healthy lives.

Each seminar class includes about 16 students—a blend of peers from Menlo Middle School and those new to the community—and meets approximately seven times over two weeks during A Block.
